The Life Iberlince project is awarded the 1st Regional Award for the Environment in Castilla-La Mancha
2017-06-06
The Life+Iberlince project for the 'Recovery of the historical distribution of the Iberian Lynx (Lynx pardinus) in Spain and Portugal', coordinated by the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning of the Regional Government of Andalusia, and involving two countries (Spain and Portugal) and four autonomous communities, was awarded the 1st Regional Award for the Environment in Castilla-La Mancha, an award which distinguishes the commitment of the European project toward the environment.
Representing the Regional Government of Andalusia, the Deputy Minister of the Environment, José Luis Hernández, recalled that the current project, which was honoured yesterday, consists of the culmination of two previous Life projects linked together for the recovery of the Iberian lynx , and thanks to which it has been possible to go from less than 100 specimen to almost 500 lynxes in the Peninsula (according to data from the last Iberlince census), of which almost 10 percent are in Castilla-La Mancha, in the Montes de Toledo and the Sierra Morena Oriental.
In this regard, it’s worth remembering that the second of these Life projects, the 'Andalusian Lynx Reintroduction', was recently upheld by the European Commission as the best LIFE project of the last 25 years in the Nature and Biodiversity category.
In addition to the Iberlince project, at the World Environment Day ceremony, five special mentions were also given to the AntiFrancking platforms in Guadalajara and the Campo de Montiel-La Mancha, which were accompanied by an important representation; Miguel Fajardo, coordinator of environmental agents in the Albacete province; the Obra Social La Caixa-Caixabank; the Yebes City Hall, in Guadalajara, and FOMECAM, the company in charge of the study of the Iberian Lynx reintroduction area, release planning and marking, the census and monitoring of Iberian lynx specimen, among many other duties.
On behalf of the Life+Iberlince project, we want to thank the Castilla-La Mancha Government for this award, which is an additional incentive to keep on working on each of the objectives detailed in the project, and to congratulate each and every award winner in this first Edition of the Regional Award for the Environment.
