Moreira, a young female released in Mértola (Portugal)

On Tuesday, June1st, ended the second season of reintroduction of the Iberian lynx copies, under the Project "Recovery of Historical Distribution of the Iberian Lynx (Lynx pardinus) in Spain and Portugal (LIFE+ 10/NAT/ES/000570 - Iberlince)".
This female, released on 1 June, is named Moreira, it was born on March 16, 2015 and is from the Centro de Cria del Lince Ibérico El Acebuche - Andalusia. Just like the releasing of the lynx Monfrague, ICNF with the collaboration of the Sociedade Horta das Laranjeiras in whose property in Mertola the releasement was held. Thus there is one more step towards the establishment of a viable wild population and in a geographical area that was once part of its historical range, thus returning to the millennial coexistence with humans.
For the Iberian lynx a viable population will be achieved when they obtain about 50 females stabilized in the territory, which is expected to continue with the second phase of the reintroduction process.
The releasement of the iberian lynx in Mértola is the result of the close cooperation and coordination with Spain and it is made possible by an important collaboration with local partners. This process does not provide for any restrictions or limitations on agricultural activities, forestry, tourism and hunting.
