The partners of the European Project Life+IBERLINCE among which are the Autonomous Organisation of National Parks, Ministry of Development of Spain, the Ministry of the Environment of Portugal, the regional governments of Andalusia, Castilla La Mancha, Murcia and Extremadura, Infraestruturas of Portugal SA, Empresa de Desenvolvimento e Infraestruturas do Alqueva, SA and Câmara Municipal de Moura, as well as companies (Fomecam, Agroforex, Acajú), associations and non-governmental organizations (Andalusian Federation of Hunting, Aproca, SECEM, Adenex, WWF Spain, Fundación CBD-Habitat, Iberlynx Association), coordinated by the Andalusian, make up the Monitoring Committee Life+Iberlince Project.
The Monitoring Committee met in Sevilla on Tuesday, July 28, to discuss the state of the project and make a pooling of the evolution of the lynx released into new areas of reintroduction.
The success that takes all new reintroduction areas where are now new puppies born in freedom, in addition to the already consolidated in Andalusia, it suggests that the hopes with which this project was established are fulfilled.
Since 2009 they began reintroductions, the first in Andalusia (in Guarrizas and Guadalmellato), they have been released a total of 170 copies. Social support of farm owners, managers, hunters, hunting and population in general has been critical to these positive results which suggest that the Iberian lynx is returning, even timidly, to take their historical distribution were achieved.
On the last May, the Andalusian received the Natura 2000 Award of the European Commission (EC) in European Citizenship category for its management to halt the extinction of the Iberian lynx. This award is a recognition of the major actions taken to prevent the extinction of the Iberian lynx, financed by the three LIFE EU project in which the Andalusian has been benefited coordinator, and the collaboration of the owners of farms and companies hunters who have a favourable habitat for the Iberian lynx, and signed custody agreements and cooperation agreements to ensure the reintroduction of specimens in the wild.
The Iberlince manuals already edited were also presented in the Commission: “Protocolo de Liberaciones de Lince Ibérico”, “Protocolo de Control Sanitario”, “Protocolo de Actuaciones de Mejora en áreas de Reintroducción” and “protocolo de Control Sanitario”. These manuals can be consulted in the Life+IBERLINCE Project’s website: www.iberlince.eu.
