THE IMPORTANCE OF CONSERVING BUSHES AND FOREST AREAS
2014-12-05
LIn the bottom of Serra Morena, towards Guadalquivir River, exists centenary olive trees in large extensions, with an extensive exploitation.
Serra Morena’s steeply sloping land, didn’t allow their grow in all its extension, so some land have been left over and has Mediterranean bushes, which interleaved the grow areas. In this way, properties are limited with several hedges, making a very interesting landscape.
An important surface of Cardeña/Andújar – Guadalmellato connecting zone, remained covered with this exploitation, and with these characteristics.
On these bushes and forest areas, remain a rich flora and fauna biodiversity, sometimes better than some mountain areas. On the same way, rabbit’s area and densities are higher on this zone, thanks to a patchwork landscape, that provides shelter and food.
Last weeks, several landowners of Villa del Río and Montoro zones, have been in contact with Project LIFE field team, to inform about the seeing of Iberian Lynx. Until this moment, were located 3 Lynx on this area.
The conservation of these Mediterranean Forest areas, is essential for the Lynx flow between the two populations, as well as to its local fixation.
After many decades, Iberian Lynx will be seen wandering around old mills on Montoro, Villa del Río and Marmolejo, including drinking in the Guadalquivir riverbank.
Who could have imagined one decade or so ago?
