Iberian Lynx return to Portugal

Today, 16th of December, with the presence of Minister of Environment, Territory Management and Energy, were released two Iberian Lynx specimen on Portuguese soil.
This historic achievement marks the return of this species, in critical danger of extinction, to Portuguese soil, that has been absent for more than two decades.
The two specimens were released on Guadiana Valley, on Mértola’s Municipality.
The reintroduction was taken place on the aim of LIFE+IBERLINCE Project, which is coordinated by the Regional Ministry of the Environment and Territorial of the Regional Government of Andalusia, counting on with 19 partners, including ICNF, 5 Spanish Administrations, ONG’s, Private and Public companies.
In this way, is achieved the main goal of the project, which is the recovery of the specie’s historical distribution.
The two specimens, a female named Jacarandá and a male named Katmandú, come from the captive breeding program.
The reintroduction was made through the system of soft release.
Jacarandá and Katmandú were released on an adaptive fence, were will remain 20 to 30 days. Once adapted to the new environment, shall be released definitely.
The animals were equipped with GPS collars that will facilitate the monitoring when they are definitely released in the middle of nature.
This Guadiana Valley region was evaluated and recognized as suitable for the reintroduction according to the Iberlince project protocols. To this end, some habitat improvement works were performed and agreements with owners, will take place new actions among them, rabbits population monitoring and sensitization of the population of the surrounding areas.
The established cooperation between the administration and privates, noticeable on the Andalusia releases, was an extremely important tool to the species conservation.
In this sense, the ICNF signed, on June, the so-called National Pact to Iberian Lynx Conservation. This agreement involve 20 landowners associations, farmers, hunters, ONG’s, Scientifics and others institutions.
