On Thursday, January 12, a humane euthanasia was carried out on the Beta specimen at the La Olivilla Iberian Lynx Breeding Center.
Beta was a male from the town of Andujar, son of Cabrera, from the 2005 cohort that was captured on June 27, 2006 in the Castellones area at the Valquemado estate, and remained at CREA de Los Villares (Córdoba) Conducting its quarantine and in order to join the network of breeding centers in captivity, being transferred on April 15, 2007 to the Breeding Center of La Olivilla where it has remained since then.
Beta began its history as a player being a father in 2009 of one of the first layers born in the center of La Olivilla. Fruit of its pairing with the Castañuela female were born three puppies (Falco, Fauno and Fábula) in 2009 and two in 2010 (Gamma and Guara).
It was one of the individuals affected by chronic kidney disease, being diagnosed ill in phase three in the sanitary check-ups performed in December 2009. Since then the specimen has received medical treatment in order to improve his quality of life.
Exceeding expectations given its pathology, in 2011 it was matched with Estela, although the gestation of the female who was first did not reach term, and in 2012 was the father of 4 puppies (Jaguarzo, Jamila, Jaral and Jareña) after their match with the female Caña, being reintroduced Jamila in the area of Guarrizas and Jareña transferred to the population of Doñana.
Beta remained asymptomatic, but from then on it was its children who contributed genetically providing pups that have been released in the various areas of reintroduction.
In 2015 it began to show obvious symptoms of the progressive progression of his disease, surpassing also a hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. This specimen has maintained the strong mood that has always characterized him, but once the terminal phase was established and after confirming physiological values of no return, euthanasia was carried out in order to avoid suffering and pain.
The corpse was transferred to the Center of Analysis and diagnosis of the Junta de Andalucía to perform the complete necropsy of the specimen.
