Iberlince reintroduces in the Sierra Morena the first copy of the sixteen that it plans to release in CLM during 2017.
The Life+IBERLINCE project has reintroduced the first of the sixteen Iberian lynxes that it plans to release in Castilla-La Mancha throughout 2017 in the area of the Sierra Morena Oriental reintroduction.
Natureza, a female born last year at the Silves Captive Breeding Center (Portugal), has been released at the "Chicho Méndez" wildlife refuge, in the municipality of Castellar de Santiago, in the province of Ciudad Real.
The Life+IBERLINCE project, which in Castilla-La Mancha is led by the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Development, Fomecam, Aproca and WWF, with this release continues with its objective of trying to strengthen the presence of this species in the territories In which it was traditionally present.
The release of Nature is the first to be carried out over the next few months to complete the release of sixteen Iberian lynx specimens.
Of these, eight are released in the Sierra Morena Oriental, and eight others in the Montes de Toledo, which are two areas where these specimens have adequate habitat for conservation and reproduction.
The sixteen Iberian lynx specimens to be released in Castilla-La Mancha account for 40 percent of all lynxes to be released on the Life+IBERLINCE project in the Iberian peninsula, making Castilla-La Mancha in the community Autonomous in which more lynxes are going to be released.
With the release of "Nature" a total of 44 Iberian lynxes have been released in the region since the year 2014.
The release of these specimens has allowed in recent years to consolidate both the Sierra Morena reintroduction area and the Montes de Toledo as stable nuclei for the conservation of the Iberian lynx.
In fact, in both areas during the past year this species was obtained in the wild, with nineteen pups being born in total, of which five were in the province of Ciudad Real and fourteen in the Montes de Toledo.
