The Life project 'Conservation and reintroduction of the Iberian lynx in Andalusia' (2006-2011) has been nominated along with five other Life projects to receive the 'Green Awards', an award with which the European Commission will distinguish the best Projects of the last 25 years, since the start of the program itself (1992-2017).
The selection, as pointed out by the European Commission, has been based on a series of criteria such as the long-term sustainability of the project, the communication potential of the project, national and international impact, European or global. It has also valued innovation, environmental benefits or improvements in the state of conservation.
In particular, the Iberian lynx reintroduction project in Andalusia, the second of Life projects led by the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning of the Junta de Andalucía for the conservation of the Iberian lynx, has been selected in the category of Life Nature and Biodiversity, along with four other Life projects: AlterIAS, Life+Saber The Raptors, BurrenLIFE and SloWolf.
Of the five nominees in this category, the European Commission will distinguish two of the Green Awards. The two projects awarded in the Nature and Biodiversity category will be chosen by popular vote through a Facebook page that the European Commission has authorized for this (http://wshe.es/iL3pDd0w), announcing the winners on 30 may.
In the remaining categories, Environment and Climate Action have been nominated the Life From Roof to Road, BREAD4PLA, EWWR, SOL-BRINE and LOWaste (in Environment) and Agri Climate Change, ClimaBiz, SLIDE IN, DYEMOND SOLAR and ACUMEN projects. Climate Action.
The Life project 'Conservation and reintroduction of the Iberian lynx in Andalusia' is the second of the Life projects implemented by the Ministry of Environment in its commitment to the conservation of the Iberian lynx, which started in 2000 with the conservation programs of the species. The excellent results of the first Life 'Recovery of the Iberian Lynx populations in Andalusia' (2002-2006) and the second (nominated), with which the species fell from the category of 'Critically Endangered to Endangered', Promoted a third project ('Recovery of the historical distribution of the Iberian lynx in Spain and Portugal'), currently under way.
