Released in Extremadura the eighth and last lynx of 2017
2017-05-11
Neruda, a male Iberian lynx from the Acebuche Breeding Center, has been released today by the so-called hard release method (direct release to the natural environment) in the Matachel Valley area.
Thus, the expected releases for 2017 are concluded, with 8 lynxes in Extremadura (4 males and 4 females) being released this year. To date, and in the absence of confirmation of the number of pups born this year, the population of lynx in extreme lands amounts to 30 individuals.
All released lynxes are equipped with a GPS location that allows tracking their movements and uses of the territory.
The reintroduction of the lynx in Extremadura is coordinated by the Directorate General for the Environment of the Regional Ministry of the Environment and Rural Affairs, Agrarian Policies and Territory of the Junta de Extremadura and began in 2014 as part of the Life+IBERLINCE project for recovery of the historical distribution of the Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) in Spain and Portugal.
Life+IBERLINCE is a transnational project, co-financed to 61.57% by the European Union and coordinated by the Andalusian Government, in which the communities of Andalusia, Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha and Murcia also participate. Agriculture, Food and Environment and the environmental organizations CBD-Hábitat, VVWF, Secem and Adenex, as well as the hunting companies Aproca and the Andalusian Hunting Federation, and the private companies Agroforex, Fomecam and Acajú, as well as recently incorporated Ministry of Development De España, Development and Infrastructure Company of Alqueva SA (EDIA), Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP S.A.) and the Municipal Council of Moura.
