The fire damage restoration in La Peñuelas, Moguer, will prioritize the lynx habitat
2017-09-01
In the coming months, work will be done to prevent erosion in dune and stream areas, as well as protect slopes and river beds
The Minister of Environment and Spatial Planning held a meeting with representatives of the technical scientific work group for the environmental restoration of the area affected by the Peñuelas fire, surrounding Doñana.
Said meeting was attended by the director general of the Natural Environment and Protected Areas Administration, Javier Madrid, the director of the Doñana Nature Area, Juan Pedro Castellano, and the coordinator of said work group, Miguel Angel Maneiro.
Among the matters discussed, various initiatives were analysed which will be developed throughout the year in which the natural regeneration of the burned area is expected occur, as established in the protocols put forth in these cases.
In the coming months, work will be done to prevent erosion in dune areas such as Medano del Loro, or stream areas which in turn will act as protection for slopes and channels. At the same time, a controlled cut of fire-affected pine trees will be carried out in temporary pool areas.
These initiatives will have a special impact on the Iberian lynx habitat, in addition to others such as the restoration of rabbit burrows, or fences for breeding them with the aim of facilitating a future repopulation of this species, the lynx’s main source of food.
