The Iberian Lynx reintroduction works in Extremadura on 2015, still remain.

This Friday, February 20, 2015, the release of Luna was carried out, it’s an Iberian lynx female (Lynx pardinus) from the reproduction center of Silves, in Portugal. Luna was released in a qualified fenced area, in the Matachel Valley, by the soft release method, witch means that she is released in a pre-adaptation fenced area, until it’s perfectly adapted, to subsequently being released in the natural environment.

The reintroduction of this species is the result of actions taken by the Government of Extremadura under the Life + Iberlince Project: 'Recovery of the distribution of the Iberian Lynx (Lynx pardinus) in Spain and Portugal'. In Extremadura, the project has the intervention of the Environment General Directorate of the Government of Extremadura and three other partners, Agroforex company, Fundación CBD-Habitat and Adenex.

It should be noted a year of much effort and work of technicians and the huge collaboration of the owners of the properties, the Extremadura Federation of Hunting and several administrations as the Civil Guard - SEPRONA, area Municipalities, Regional Ministry of Education and Culture, Regional Ministry of Public Works, Housing, Territorial Planning and Tourism, the Agents of Environment and the University of Extremadura.

In the last three and a half years of work, numerous actions have been implemented to achieve the main goal: to get a stable population of lynx in Extremadura. Habitat improvement actions, health studies of carnivores, actions to avoid being run over in roads, selecting areas for reintroduction, census of rabbits and habitat and control of threats to the species, etc. Were also detailed disclosure actions, social awareness and information on the reintroduction of the Iberian lynx, fundamentally to raise awareness of the population of reintroduction areas and all Extremadura, in general.
