1st Trail Iberlince Barrancos

On November 18th, the village of Barrancos was filled with participants running in search of the lynx. This event sought to sensitize the population regarding the need to preserve the Iberian lynx in Portugal.

The sunny, warm day reminded some to come out for a walk... others to win some trials!

Altogether, 512 participants trekked the Iberian lynx’s paths on the 1st Iberlince Trail Barrancos. Along the way, participants were presented with breath-taking scenery and, despite the courses’ technical difficulties, with its many ascents and descents, the trial was conquered with good spirits.

Participants were provided with a kit offered by the LIFE+Iberlince project and sponsoring bodies. At the end of each trial, their efforts were rewarded with the lynx footprint, painted by Arts Group students of the Barrancos Schools Grouping.

The "Lynx Territories" exhibit was present, informing participants about the Life+IBERLINCE Project, the species’ biology, threats to its survival and benefits of its recovery, reintroductions in Portugal, and ongoing actions.

The 1st Iberlince Trail Barrancos consisted of 3 types of trials: 11 km, 21 km and 40 km, the latter being integrated in the Lacatoni Portugal Trail Cup, Southern Region; scheduled trial of the Portugal Trail Running Association (ATRP). Paulo Guerra, the European cross-country champion, born in Barrancos, was honored at the event.

The initiative was organized by the Barrancos Futebol Clube (BFC) with the support of the LIFE+Iberlince project, the Barrancos Municipality, Nature Park of Noudar, Biogado and the Barrancos Schools Grouping.
