Lynx Niebla’s body found shot in Villafranca de Córdoba
2017-12-28
On Monday, December 26th, Life Iberlince project specialists located the corpse of a female Iberian lynx in the Las Cumbres area, in Villafranca de Córdoba (Córdoba). This specimen’s collar, part of the radio tracking program, showed signs of inactivity, which confirmed the worst predictions.
It was identified as being Niebla, a young lynx released on January 30th at the La Ventilla estate, also in Villafranca de Córdoba. This female, daughter of Kilimanjaro and Coscoja, originating La Olivilla captive breeding centre, in Santa Elena (Jaén), was baptized this year by 3rd and 4th grade schoolchildren of the Ferroviario school in Cordova, as part of the #BautizaUnLince (Baptize a Lynx) campaign.
These children also attended the release of Niebla, witnessing her first run in the wild. Now, it will be difficult for them to understand how the action of man has ended with the life of this young specimen, whom they baptized, to whom they dedicated their stories, their drawings, and with whom they lived an unforgettable experience, such as her release.
The animal’s body – which, at the specialists’ first glance, did not show signs of violence – was transferred to Wildlife Analysis and Diagnosis Centre (CAD) of the Regional Government of Andalusia where a complete post-mortem examination is being performed.
According to preliminary data gathered in the procedure, "around 35 leads have been found in the lynx’s body", which proves human action is behind this fatality.
