Andalusian populations of iberian-lynx 2014
2015-04-13
On the april 10th, the Councillor for the Environment and Spatial Planning during the liberation of “Lenteja”, a female that is already part of the Guadalmellato (Cordoba) fields, presented the censes’ data for the Andalusian populations of iberian-lynx, according to the year of 2014.
The iberian-lynx’s censes take place annually to determine the population’s evolution and to do an appreciation of the conservation actions’ success.
The actions have been performed since 2002, by European financing throughout Life projects that have been executed over a custody strategy planning across the signature of some agreements with field’s owners and hunter’s societies.
The lynx’s procreation season begins at the end of December and ends in January. Births usually happen at the end of March. During the first months, the cubs stay in the lair of birth and, by the middle of June, they start to follow their mothers being consequently susceptible to be detected. It is for that reason that censes are starting to be performed in the middle of June, ending just after January/February of the year after.
Censes are performed by photo trapping. Since 2001 they’ve been using the same methodology that consists in going through all the presence area of the species, strategically placing hidden cameras in the lynx’s territory. Each year there is a photo trapping campaign during which they install a hidden camera per quarter-kilometre in almost every area marked by lynx’s presence.
