“Lupus” released in the surrounding of “Guarrizas” (Jaén)
2015-08-07
The Minister of Environment and Land Management of Junta de Andalucia released on the last Friday, August 7, "Lupus" a male Iberian lynx, born in 2014, in Valquemado. It is "Lupus" a young male descendant of "Rapas" and “Jackal", who was captured last July in the population center of Jándula in Andújar-Cardeña (Sierra Morena). It underwent a thorough health inspection, and transported to the quarantine zone “Centro de Cría do Lince Ibérico La Olivilla”. Once obtained the results of tests performed, it was confirmed that it is a fit Lynx and does not constitute any immediate threat to the target population. "Lupus" was released in the surrounding environment of Guarrizas River in Jaén. The area was elected as reintroduction area for the Iberian-lynx a few years ago and has not yet reached its maximum stocking density, so it is supposed to be an ideal habitat for this specimen, where intraspecific competition is smaller, offering a higher chance of survival.
