Miranda’s History
2015-09-14
Miranda, a female Iberian lynx was found dead for no apparent reason, on September 8 by an average person who alerted the Seprona and technicians of the Life+Iberlince Project in the County of Andalusia.
Miranda’s history is full of hope for all.
Technicians of CBD Habitat Foundation detected it at first in May 2001, as an adult, at "Barranco San Miguel", which could have been the day of its death over 17 years old, and become one of the oldest lynx known alive.
It occupied one of the provinces of Valle del Jándula, and had more than 8 cubs, some of which have had a strong role: Barraca captured with problems in one eye joined the breeding program; Caberú trans located in the first reintroduction in Cordoba; or caribou, lynx of Sierra Morena who was the first to try the genetic reinforcement in Doñana, although he starred in a wide dispersion that took him to Portugal. Elam, their last child "inherited" their territory, as an example of philopatric and matrilineal nature of some female lynx.
In late December 2014, after several months of missing its previous known territory of the people of Sierra Morena, technicians of the Life+Iberlince Project in the County of Andalusia, located in the South periphery of the heart of the reintroduction area where Guarrizas established itself. Since then, it has been detected in the area of expansion of this population near the dam of Fernandina and the area where it died. This issue has played an important role in connection with the core Guarrizas Eastern Sierra Morena after serving throughout its life many important milestones for the population of lynx in Andalusia.
It seems that (while awaiting toxicology tests) Miranda has died due to old age, after a fruitful life.
