Lynxes released in Castilla La Mancha adapt to their new territories
2014-08-08
Since the Iberian Linx Commission, held in Seville on 28 May this year, the 19 members of the European LIFE + Project Iberian Lynx, agreed upon start up the first copies of reintroductions of Iberian lynx in Castilla-La Mancha and, after a short period of time, it turns out a successful reintroduction. The eight reintroduced Lynxes in Castilla-La Mancha, about a month ago, Kala, Kivu, Kung-fu, Kiki, Kaplan, Kairos, Kiowa and Kenitra, are adapting normally to the new territories in which they were released.
The results of the monitoring work being undertaken by the technical team of the project LIFE Iberian Lynx, by the Environment technicians and by technicians of the Ministry of Agriculture, confirm that these samples exceeded the first phase of adaptation.
Some of reintroduced Lynxes, which have remained some time near the release area, began to explore new farther territories, looking for places to settle definitely.
In the case of one of the released specimen in Castillar de Santiago, Kung-fu, this went to the nearby community of Andalusia, where the staff of Iberian Lynx Life + project that works in this region, has been in charge of its monitoring.
All Lynxes released in the eastern area of the Sierra Morena, have a good physical condition, as through direct observation of the photo-trapping cameras, installed in areas of reintroduction, which have allowed to photograph the Lynxes.
The adaptation of these Lynxes is a good news for the Life + Iberian Lynx program, because it reinforces the purpose of increasing the current population of Iberian lynx in the Iberian Peninsula and expand their settlements beyond Andalusia.
