The main goal of the Plan Captive Breeding of the Iberian lynx, which includes Spain and Portugal, and it is about establish a captive lynx stock capable of producing genetically unfit animals suitable for reintroduction, with the dual purpose of ensuring the survival of the species while providing animals fit to reinforce wild populations, increase genetic variability or be reintroduced to places of historical presence and that are suitable for recovery.
The captive breeding program, which has five breeding centers, four in Spain and one in Portugal, has copies of lynx that are no longer suitable for breeding or can contribute genetically to the captive breeding program and cannot be returned the natural environment having spent part of his life or the whole life in captive.
These copies, however, can continue to contribute to the protection, conservation and awareness of society as well as the disclosure about the situation and problems of the sort, for it began to sell them to zoos and parks with a similar philosophy not only places to see animals, but as centers where you can learn about different species and thus become places of conservation and preservation of species. They are therefore places where it conducts an outreach and environmental education is done to raise awareness and involve the population in general, and the youth in particular.
These shelter began in Andalusia with the Zoobotánico of Jerez (Cadiz) to keep along with the presence of a couple on the Lisbon Zoo and two more copies which were transferred in 2015 to SELWO (Málaga). Nowadays there are some requests ongoing to the zoos of Madrid and Cordoba, two zoos of Porto (Portugal) and an environmental park in Andujar (Jaen).
To the welcome centers wanting to shelter lynx from the breeding program is asked a chord with the welfare facilities of the species and an environmental education program that propagates the Iberian conservation and recovery of the species.
In this regard, the City of Córdoba has tendered the project to build the new exhibition will serve to accommodate a couple of lynx as a result of the efforts made in the previous municipal corporation.
