Gomera
2016-03-07
On February 22 it turned two years. That day Gomera was trapped by a snare illegally installed by a poacher, in the municipality of Montoro (Córdoba).
Gomera is a female from the population Yeguas and was captured as a cub, to be reintroduced into the valley of Guadalmellato. In this area it a became territorial female only two years aged, however, it was evicted by another dominant female, being forced to move.
The radio transmitterbearing installed was allowed to indicate us where it was going. It took the westbound, on the foothills of Sierra Morena and close to the Guadalquivir, to stop settling in the Valley Corcomé, within the municipality of Montoro, in an area of ancient olive groves with islands of Mediterranean forest, where he met with rabbit and adequate shelter. When it reached a couple of months here, in one day of its routine tours, it had the misfortune to be caught up to his waist by a steel loop, allegedly placed by a poacher.
The trap was tied on a branch, on the edge of one of the paths that this female often used to move through its territory.
A person who scanned the mountains collecting wild asparagus found when it gave jerks to escape.
This very worried man, scurried to find phone coverage and be able to call some friends of Villa del Rio, who had contact with Police officers and staff of Life+Iberlince team immediately rushed to the scene of incident together with Agents Environment, Seprona and a veterinarian.
After a rigorous spot check, it was evident that it had no significant damage, perceiving that had caught few hours, that end out being the reason why they chose to release it in the same place. It has been two years of that event and this female lynx still patrolling its domain, becoming very famous among the residents of Montoro and Villa del Río. Many callers by phone or stop team members Life+Iberlince to inquire about his health.
Gomera history continues, and it is not alone, because it is accompanied by two cubs to whose gave birth on this past season, they are called Quince and Melia.
We hope that in the present Gomera and the male with whose it is sharing that territory, called Libertad, have new shoots, and it looks like it will, because the camera traps have reflected her pregnancy.
Once again we must thank the residents of Montoro and Villa del Río the help given its commitment to the species, and the satisfaction that gives us every day to members of our team for reporting their sightings and move your joy of returning to live with the species, after many decades of absence.
The municipality of Montoro is very involved in the new core of lynxes, installed within the territory of Gomera, warning signs by trampling on paved roads within its jurisdiction.
