The Iberian lynx cub removed from the field after maternal abandonment continues to grow healthy and strong in Doñana
2017-09-12
Odiel, the Iberian lynx cub that was removed from the field at a very young age by Life Iberlince project specialists along with his sister Onuba at the end of April, after their mother abandoned the litter, continues to grow healthy and strong to this day, as confirmed by the specialists responsible for monitoring the Doñana-Aljarafe area population.
This son of Iris was transferred last spring with his litter sister (who, alas, didn’t survive) to the Iberian lynx captive breeding centre in El Acebuche (Huelva) and experienced eviction from this centre first-hand due to the proximity of the Doñana fire in the month of June.
According to preliminary data from the 2017 census, still at 50 percent of its execution, at least 11 breeding females with a minimum of 20 cubs have been detected in the Doñana-Aljarafe area. A number which is expected to be higher, given that this year's camera trap campaign hasn’t yet been finalized, and that specialists are still collecting information on the area’s lynx populations.
